There is a wealth of information available for those interested in learning more about intoxicated driving and those organizations that have taken on the fight against it – at the local, state and national level. What follows is a list of some of the more well-known groups as well as a bit of background and contact information for each.
*Mothers Against Drunk Driving. This is the most renowned of organizations that actively campaign to bring an end to drinking and driving. Founded in the early 1980s by a mother who lost her young daughter to a drunk driver – it now boasts chapters in every state as well as countries around the world. In addition, it has spawned subgroups – such as Students Against Drunk Driving – that further the cause of shining a light on this ongoing problem. Their website is interactive and informative. For more information visit: www.madd.org.
*IDDPA – International Drunk Driving Prevention Association. This non-profit group works to avert drunk driving, help victims of drunk driving accidents, lobby legislators concerning drunk driving regulations and support the development of preventative technologies. Find out more at: www.iddpa.org.
*Safe Ride Home – as its name suggests this community organization that is a designated driver service that employs vetted drivers who will chauffeur an individual and/or their party to a desired destination – in your own vehicle. While there is a fee for this service – the first experience is always free as is a ride on your birthday. When considered against the cost and potential for disaster that could occur if one chooses to drive drunk – it’s a cheap choice indeed. You can find out more information about them at: www.saferidehomemc.com.
