Although there is a growing consciousness of the dangers of drunk driving thanks to organizations such as Mothers against Drunk Driving, (M.A.D.D.) and many others it is still at unfortunate epidemic levels across the country and the result is often wrongful death for innocent victims. This is certainly true in the greater Houston area. Let us look at some recent incidences of drunk driving in Houston.
Harris County has THE highest rates of drunk driving fatalities among similar counties across the United States! An estimated 60% of traffic fatalities in the Houston area are alcohol related.
Horrific results of drunken driving accidents in recent months include the death of a wife and mother and a double fatality was the alleged drunk driver reportedly could barely standup. Both of these incidences occurred because people still get behind the wheel of their vehicle drunk instead of using a dedicated driver, calling a cab or not drinking in the first place.
Driving while intoxicated turns cars and trucks into death machines. Worse many very good people get drunk and injure another while at the same time reeking havoc in their own lives.
While it is one thing to gamble with your own life – it is also gambling with the lives of others.
It is truly sad that the problem seems to go larger and not abating. I call for further action in the form of education to aid the fight. Surely in all the areas of cut backs this is one that we need to increase funding!
